Aspendos Ancient Theatre, in Antalya's Serik district, is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres still standing in the world. Built in the 2nd century AD, it still hosts concerts and festivals today.
The theatre's architect is known as Zenon, and the building was completed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Its capacity of around 15,000, its almost fully preserved stage building and its remarkable acoustics still amaze visitors. Its use as a caravanserai in the Seljuk period helped preserve it so well. The aqueducts and basilica of the ancient city can also be seen near the theatre.
At Aspendos, a word whispered on stage can be heard from the top rows; the acoustics have been surprising people for two thousand years.
